About

Muzeum – Zamek w Oporowie

Oporów Castle was built in the 15th century by Archbishop Władysław Oporowski, son of Mikołaj, Voivode of Łęczyca, as the family seat of the Oporowski family of the Sulima coat of arms. It is a small late Gothic fortified residence on an island surrounded by a moat: the residential house, the tower and the tower with its chapel, linked by a wall around a four-sided courtyard, are among the few surviving layouts of this kind in Poland.

Later owners, from the Tarnowski and Sołłohub families to the Orsetti and Karski families, changed the castle only slightly. Around 1840 a Neo-Gothic gate portal and a terrace in front of the bridge were added, and the Orsetti family laid out a landscape park with canals, ponds and stone steps down to the moat decorated with lion sculptures.

Since 16 February 1949 the castle has been a museum of manor interiors. Conservation in 1962-1965 revealed Gothic portals, 17th-century painted ceilings and a cache of weapons probably hidden after the January Uprising. Today the display presents portraits, furniture, textiles, faience, silver and weapons from the 16th to the early 20th century, and the castle interiors have appeared in films and television series, including "Duch z Canterville" and "Korona królów".
