About

Muzeum Ziemi Chełmskiej im. Wiktora Ambroziewicza

Gallery 72, a royal document concerning the icon of Our Lady of Chełm, and mammoth remains belong to different parts of the same museum's collections. In Chełm, contemporary art shares the museum with the town's history, archaeology, natural history and regional folk culture. The collections range from works by avant-garde artists to everyday objects from rural homes.

Museum collecting in the town dates back to 1882. The Church and Archaeological Museum founded that year held, among other things, furnishings taken from Greek Catholic churches after the suppression of the Union in 1875. Following the destruction and dispersal of the collections during the First World War, Wiktor Ambroziewicz began rebuilding the museum at a local secondary school in 1919. The institution has borne his name since 2009.

The four main buildings have different histories: a former Piarist college, historic townhouses, the "Zwierciadło" printing house and a Baroque Uniate church. They house geometric abstraction, documents from the town's past, fossils and the furnishings of a village room decorated for a festive occasion. A separate exhibition on communist repression occupies the former cells of the Chełm security office.
