About

Muzeum Ziemi Leżajskiej

Muzeum Ziemi Leżajskiej (the Museum of the Leżajsk Land) has operated since 1 January 2008 in the starost's manor complex on Mickiewicza Street. The residence dates back to 1524-1532, when starost Krzysztof Szydłowiecki built a timber defensive complex with ramparts and a tower here. The present brick manor house was built in 1760-1770 for Józef Potocki, the last starost of Leżajsk.

For most of the 20th century the complex housed schools: a grammar school from 1922 and later other schools until 2001. In 2004 the buildings were taken over by the Leżajsk County Office, which restored them and set up the museum.

Visitors can explore four permanent exhibitions in different buildings of the complex. The cellars of the oldest outbuilding present the archaeology and Old Polish history of the region, while the manor attic holds an exhibition on the history of the town, its multicultural past and the memory of both world wars. The ethnographic and toy exhibition tells of Leżajsk as one of the three main centres of wooden toy-making in Poland, and the brewing exhibition follows local brewing from the 1525 privilege to the 20th-century brewery.

In front of the museum stands the Leżajsk Toy Park with enlarged models of traditional toys, and the manor also features a bourgeois sitting room from the 1920s.
