Ogród Botaniczny Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego
Wrocław’s Botanical Garden was founded in 1811 on former fortifications granted to the university by Frederick William III. Its collection began with an order for 427 plants from a gardener in Oleśnica. The garden developed as a place of research and teaching. Its layout still demonstrates different ways of understanding plants: through their relationships, origins and habitats.
The alpine garden contains mountain species, while a section through the Wałbrzych coal deposits illustrates the region’s geological past. Waterside vegetation surrounds a pond that was once an arm of the Oder. A separate basin holds a collection of hardy water lilies. Trees and shrubs form the Wrocław arboretum, while ornamental beds change from spring flowers to autumn foliage.
The greenhouse collections include succulents, bromeliads and other plants from warm climates. Aquatic plants in the aquariums are grouped by geographical origin. Some subtropical specimens spend the warmer months outdoors in containers. Flowering and the display of these plants depend on the season. The palm house is undergoing reconstruction as a separate project and is not part of the accessible exhibition.
For children
Plants in this garden help you discover different habitats around the world. The garden was founded in 1811, when the university ordered its first 427 plants. They were planted on land once occupied by the city’s fortifications.
Mountain plants grow in the alpine garden. Beside the pond, you can learn about plants that like water and wet soil. Water lilies grow in a separate basin. The collection of trees and shrubs is called an arboretum. Flower beds look different in spring, summer and autumn because not all plants bloom at once.
The greenhouses protect plants from warmer parts of the world. Succulents store water, while Tillandsia can absorb it through their leaves. Aquariums display plants that live in water. Some greenhouse specimens go outside only during the warmer months. The palm house is being rebuilt and is not part of the accessible displays.
