About

Pohronské múzeum

Pohronské múzeum occupies Nová Baňa's former town hall, a Gothic building erected after 1353 and rebuilt following a fire in the first half of the eighteenth century. The council chamber retains Baroque portraits of rulers, while Gothic and Renaissance details survive elsewhere in the building. The history of the museum's home is therefore part of the visit, alongside the collections housed inside.

Mining tools, insignia and miniature mines tell the story of the occupation that shaped the town. Glass, clocks and domestic furnishings reveal other crafts and aspects of everyday life. The art collections include a Late Gothic Madonna from Hodruša-Hámre and folk woodcarving by Štefan Trnka.

The volcanology exhibition offers a different perspective, combining geological specimens with digital presentations. Historic photographs bring the focus back to the town, recording buildings, streets and the square at successive stages of change.
