About

Społeczne Muzeum Militarne - Fort nr 9

Fort No. 9 at 33 Pełczyńska Street preserves interiors built for soldiers: casemates, corridors and a brick-and-concrete shelter. Today, they house the Community Military Museum. The nineteenth-century structure belonged to the ring of defences surrounding Wrocław. A visit combines the fortification itself with objects connected to the city’s military past.

The shelter displays Wrocław’s military history. A particularly distinctive collection consists of helmets uncovered during works on Koszarowa Street, on the grounds of former barracks. For the 2026 season, the museum also announced a display of costumes loaned by the Wrocław Feature Film Studio, including uniforms from “Four Tank-Men and a Dog”. This connects the collection with the history of filmmaking in Wrocław.

The outdoor collection covers several areas of military technology: a T-55 tank, SKOT WPT technical recovery vehicle, BRDM-1 reconnaissance vehicle, Su-20 aircraft and artillery. Their different functions matter as much as their size. The reconnaissance vehicle gathered information, the SKOT WPT provided technical assistance and the tank was designed for combat.

The Jedynka Foundation took over the neglected site in 2014. Restoration continued for several years with support from the city and donors. The former military complex became a place for exhibitions, meetings and historical events, while its main shelter remains part of the history on display.

A visit has two parts: the exhibition in the main shelter and the outdoor courtyard with military equipment. Either can be visited first. Allow around 30-40 minutes for the shelter alone. Outdoor exhibits have information panels. Visitors may enter the accessible interiors of the tank, SKOT WPT technical recovery vehicle and BRDM-1 vehicle, subject to museum rules and current availability. The Su-20 cockpit remains closed.

A T-34 tank and an AS-1 staff bus joined the collection in 2026. The bus awaits restoration, so its acquisition does not mean that its interior is open to visitors. The museum also runs defence preparedness training for groups from Wrocław secondary schools; details should be arranged directly with the organisers.

The museum grounds contain 11 shelters of various kinds, including one-person observation shelters from the Second World War, a storage shelter and a metal shelter. Not all are one-person shelters or open to visitors; check access to their interiors on site.

For children

In this museum, one large historic object surrounds smaller ones. It is Fort No. 9, a former military structure built in the nineteenth century. It belonged to a belt of defences around Wrocław. Inside its shelter are rooms called casemates and corridors once used by soldiers.

Today, these interiors help visitors learn about the city’s history. One collection contains helmets found on Koszarowa Street. They do not come from an invented story: workers uncovered them during repairs, and archaeologists studied the discovery. For the 2026 season, the museum also announced a display of film costumes, including uniforms from “Four Tank-Men and a Dog”, loaned by Wrocław’s film studio.

Larger machines stand outside. The T-55 tank, SKOT WPT technical recovery vehicle and BRDM-1 reconnaissance vehicle had different jobs. There is also a Su-20 aircraft and artillery. The SKOT WPT helped repair damaged armoured carriers, while the BRDM-1 gathered information about the terrain.

The fort was not always a museum. It was neglected when the Jedynka Foundation took it over in 2014. Restoration work continued over the following years. Today, the shelter and the collected objects help people learn about the past without recreating warfare.

You can begin with the shelter or the large machines in the courtyard. Allow around 30-40 minutes for the shelter. Outdoor exhibits have information panels. Together with your accompanying adult, check which interiors of the tank, SKOT WPT and BRDM-1 the museum allows visitors to enter. The Su-20 cockpit is closed. A T-34 tank and an AS-1 staff bus joined the collection in 2026. The bus awaits restoration, so do not assume that you can go inside.

There are 11 shelters of various kinds at the museum. They include small one-person observation shelters from the Second World War, as well as a storage shelter and a metal shelter. The number 11 does not mean eleven one-person shelters. Before entering, check with your accompanying adult which interiors are open.
