About

The AEG Exhibition includes the memories of people forced to work in the factory that operated in the fortress in 1944-1945. It opened on 9 December 2023. Around 1,500 workers were brought from Łódź in autumn 1944. Entire factory departments were moved with their staff, and production was installed in the Donjon, the Great Pincers and the High Redan casemates.

The workers lived in Kłodzko and nearby settlements; they were not prisoners of the fortress. They had limited freedom of movement after work, but failure to report for compulsory labour could lead to deportation to a concentration camp or death. The factory ran on three shifts, initially lasting 8-10 hours. After food and accommodation costs had been deducted, workers were left with 10-15 marks a month. Early in 1945 the factory was evacuated to Thuringia, leaving a testing laboratory in the fortress. Some Polish workers used the confusion of the move to escape and remained in hiding until the war ended in May.
