Twierdza Kłodzko
An extensive system of bastions, moats and casemates rises above Kłodzko’s Old Town. Kłodzko Fortress replaced an earlier stronghold and castle, taking its present form through successive Austrian and Prussian expansions. Its central Donjon housed artillery, stores and accommodation for the garrison. Beneath the defensive slope lies a network of counter-mine passages built to defend against enemy tunnels.
The upper part of the fortress combines views across the town with exhibitions about garrison life. “In the Grip of the Army” explores the recruitment and equipment of Prussian soldiers, while the AEG Exhibition presents testimony from Poles forced to work in the factory in 1944-1945. A separate tour through the labyrinth reveals the narrow underground passages of the same defensive system.
The fortress also appeared on screen: in 1970 it served as a filming location for part of “Dom” (“Home”), the final episode of “Czterej pancerni i pies” (“Four Tank-Men and a Dog”). Its walls have housed military personnel, industry and a television crew.
