Upper fortress: history and defences
Six stops on the hill’s changing uses, Prussian fortifications, forced labour and the siege.
Content language
- Starts atFortress Hill: from stronghold to fortress
The account begins with Fortress Hill: its Bohemian stronghold, castle and transformation into a complex of defences. The next stop explores Prussian expansion, Walrave’s plans and the connection between two fortified hills. It then turns to the Donjon, with its artillery positions and garrison facilities, and the Alarm Bastion in the lower defensive tier.
The AEG Exhibition introduces the history of forced labourers in 1944-1945. The route ends by returning to the siege of 1807: the signed capitulation, the deferred handover and the peace settlement that left the fortress in Prussian hands. The counter-mine labyrinth and Owcza Góra Fort across the river are separate subjects outside this sequence of stops.
