About

Twierdza Srebrna Góra

Srebrna Góra Fortress was built between 1765 and 1777 on the orders of Frederick the Great. Its forts guarded the pass between the Sowie and Bardzkie Mountains. This extensive group of buildings occupies mountain terrain, with a four-towered donjon at its centre.

Behind the thick walls lay an entire military support system: stores, a bakery, brewery, workshops and a hospital. Nine wells cut into rock supplied water. A visit takes in casemates, a model of the complex, soldiers' equipment and artillery. The crown of the donjon now offers views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

In 1807, the stronghold defended itself against Napoleon's forces. During the Second World War, two forts served as a prisoner-of-war camp for Polish officers. Its tourist history, meanwhile, dates back to the late nineteenth century. Today, exhibitions and a multimedia route about the fortress's construction accompany the historic masonry.
