About

Zamek Biskupów Warmińskich w Lidzbarku Warmińskim

Lidzbark Warmiński Castle combines Gothic architecture with interiors altered by successive bishops. Built between 1350 and 1401, it remained their main residence until the end of the eighteenth century. The bishops held both ecclesiastical and secular authority in Warmia: they needed living chambers, a chapel, assembly halls and service rooms.

Four wings surround a courtyard with two-storey arcaded galleries. Gothic paintings survive on the walls, successive occupants' coats of arms appear in the Great Refectory, and the chapel combines an older vault with Rococo furnishings. The apartments retain traces of room partitions and a passage to the bathhouse.

Nicolaus Copernicus and Ignacy Krasicki were both associated with the residence. The former lived here alongside his uncle, Bishop Łukasz Watzenrode; the latter wrote, collected art and tended the gardens. The museum displays Gothic art from Warmia and former Teutonic Prussia, the history of the castle's residents and Polish painting. The rooms themselves are part of this history, from the cellar vaults to the landscapes painted in the former serving room.
