About

Zamek Piastów Śląskich w Brzegu

On the facade of Brzeg Castle, George II and Barbara stand amid a genealogy of the Piasts carved in stone. The sculpted gate and arcaded courtyard were created during the sixteenth-century rebuilding of the medieval fortress. The Tower of Lions preserves an earlier phase of the residence, while the neighbouring Chapel of St Hedwig served as a ducal burial place.

Frederick II began the rebuilding in the 1530s, and his son George II continued it. The Prussian bombardment of 1741 destroyed a substantial part of the castle. Surviving sections included the tower, gate building, fragments of the arcades, and the basement and ground-floor rooms of the wing beside the Oder. The residence was later used as a military warehouse.

Work to establish the post-war museum began in 1945. Its first permanent exhibition opened in 1952, and it adopted the name Museum of the Silesian Piasts in 1965. The major reconstruction of the castle lasted from 1966 to 1990. Today's collections include Piast sarcophagi and memorial objects, “The Story of Moses” painting cycle, and documents belonging to families who came to Silesia from the eastern borderlands.

Getting there

The castle stands in the north-central part of Brzeg, within the old town, about a 20-minute walk from Brzeg railway station. The entrance from the Market Square and Plac Zamkowy leads through a gate with a historic threshold; an alternative entrance runs from the park over the former town moat, off ul. Oławska.
