Zamek w Pszczynie (Muzeum Zamkowe w Pszczynie)
Pszczyna Castle is among the best-preserved historic residences in Poland. A Gothic defensive castle was built here in the second quarter of the 15th century, under Helena Korybutówna, on the site of an earlier watchtower guarding the trade route between Rus and Moravia.
The residence owes its present French appearance to a rebuilding carried out in 1870-1876, commissioned by Prince Hans Heinrich XI von Pless and designed by the Paris architect Hippolyte Destailleur. Nineteenth-century furnishings from Paris were brought into the interiors, creating a residence matching the tastes of the late nineteenth-century European aristocracy.
From 1914 to 1917 the castle served as the headquarters of the German Imperial High Command: Kaiser Wilhelm II, Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg and General Erich Ludendorff all stayed here. Daisy von Pless furnished a private apartment here in the Adam style, with light colours and Chippendale-style chairs.
Today visitors move from the Gothic cellars with their armoury, through the representative piano nobile interiors, to separate themed galleries, including the Polish Hall devoted to Pszczyna's ties with Polish history.
