Main altar
A Baroque setting for a nineteenth-century painting of Christ at prayer.
Idioma del contenido
The main altar was installed in 1672, more than a decade after the first service. Its elaborate architectural framework brings painting and sculpture together in a single large composition. Furnishing the timber church took considerably longer than building its walls. Among the sculptures are Moses and John the Baptist, as well as angels. These biblical figures accompany the central image of Christ. The sculptural decoration belongs to the church’s Baroque furnishings.
The central painting depicts Christ praying on the Mount of Olives. It focuses on the event before his arrest, rather than the Nativity or Baptism. This scene determines the subject of the present altarpiece. The painting dates from 1855, making it younger than its seventeenth-century setting. The altar therefore combines two stages in the furnishing of the church: the Baroque framework and sculptures, and a painting added in the century of the church’s two-hundredth anniversary.

The altar looks like a large, decorated frame with sculptures. It came to the church in 1672. The furnishings were not all made at once: new objects were added after services had already begun. Moses, John the Baptist and angels are among the figures decorating the altar.
At the centre is a painting of Jesus praying on the Mount of Olives. It shows a biblical event before his arrest. The picture was painted in 1855, much later than the decoration around it.
The older setting and the newer painting now form a single altar. Its history therefore belongs to two different periods: the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries.
