Lion-tailed macaque
A silver-grey mane frames the face of a monkey that spends most of its life in trees.
Idioma del contenido
A grey mane around the face and a tuft of hair at the tip of the tail give the lion-tailed macaque an appearance that suggests a lion. These features help distinguish it from other macaques even when it sits still among branches. The species spends most of its time in trees. Forest canopies play a greater role in its daily life than they do for many other macaques.
These monkeys form family groups of up to about thirty individuals. Group life includes sharing a forest environment that supplies their food. They are omnivores but readily choose fruit, flowers, seeds and leaves. Plant foods therefore play an important role, although their diet is not entirely vegetarian.
Clearing forests for coffee and tea plantations is a serious threat. Removing trees takes away both living space and sources of food; hunting adds to the problem. Łódź Zoo has kept and bred this species for many years. Its space in the Orientarium has a temple-inspired design, combining architecture with a place to observe these tree-dwelling monkeys.

Łódź Zoo has kept this species for many years. Its space in the Orientarium resembles a temple. In the wild, forests are cleared to grow coffee and tea. When the forest disappears, the monkeys lose the branches they travel along and the plants that provide their food.
