Medieval bathhouse

A reconstructed wooden bathhouse with a two-person tub introduces public bathing and the local history of bathhouse keepers.

Sobre la pieza

The wooden bathhouse is a reconstruction, not a historic building relocated to the museum. Its story draws on a former bathhouse on Mill Island and the figure of Tomasz the bathhouse keeper. This section includes a tub large enough for two people, which visitors can step into.

Public bathing in Bydgoszcz left a specific documentary record. In 1549, starosta Andrzej Kościelecki, the mayor and town council contracted Tomasz to build a bathhouse for the town's residents. It was built beside the Brda River. This local example complements the reconstruction: a bathhouse served the community, rather than being a private bathroom in a home.

The museum covers hygiene from antiquity to the present. The bathhouse reconstruction belongs to its medieval section, while the 1549 document introduces a later episode in the town's bathing history.
