Sobre la pieza

Pilate’s House has two storeys because, until secularisation, the Calvary custodian lived on the lower level. The building combined religious use with accommodation for the person responsible for looking after the complex. Its plan is square, with projecting sections at the corners.

The praetorium brings together scenes connected with Jesus’ trial. Stations inside and near the chapel recall his accusation before Pilate, scourging, crowning with thorns, presentation to the crowd and condemnation to crucifixion. They form part of the larger Calvary arrangement, which assigns successive events to separate places of prayer.

Georg Schrötter carved the altar surrounds. Their central panels contain reproductions of Passion paintings, while smaller frames display the four evangelists. The decoration links the Passion narrative with the authors of the Gospel texts.

A distinctive feature of the exterior is the loggia with the Ecce Homo group, meaning “Behold the Man”. A loggia resembles a balcony but is recessed within the building. The sculptural group depicts the bound Christ and Pilate. This scene brings the story onto the chapel’s outer wall, where participants in the devotion could see it.

The exterior has a loggia, something like a balcony set within the building. Its sculptural group shows Jesus and Pilate. It is called Ecce Homo, meaning “Behold the Man”. The successive Calvary scenes help worshippers follow the Gospel story by stopping at separate chapels.
