Muzeum Etnograficzne we Wrocławiu
A wooden beehive shaped like a couple, clay pots for carrying lunch to the fields and chests filled with textiles: the Ethnographic Museum tells the story of Lower Silesia’s inhabitants through objects connected with home, work and relocation. The museum on Traugutta Street is a branch of the National Museum in Wrocław.
The permanent exhibition “Lower Silesians: Memory, Culture, Identity” has two parts. The first presents the culture of people living in the region before 1945. Painted furniture and pictures on glass form a domestic interior, while the tools of coopers, weavers, blacksmiths and gingerbread bakers introduce historic crafts. A spinning-evening diorama combines work with a social gathering.
The second part concerns people who arrived after the war. Clothing and equipment came from Poland’s former eastern provinces, central regions and Romanian Bukovina, among other places. The history of settlement also includes Lemkos forcibly resettled during Operation Vistula. Objects and family photographs record life before relocation and adjustment to new surroundings.
From 26 September to 29 November 2026, the temporary exhibition “Life on Coal” presents communities around the Turów mine and power station. Residents’ memories and images of Bogatynia, Opolno-Zdrój and the demolished village of Wigancice Żytawskie connect industrial history with everyday experiences of a changing landscape.
Pour les enfants
At the Ethnographic Museum, everyday things help explain how people once lived. A wooden couple served as a beehive. Two joined pots carried meals to the fields. Large chests held clothes and textiles during journeys.
The permanent exhibition has two parts. The first shows Lower Silesia before 1945, with household furnishings, clothing and craftspeople’s tools. The second concerns people who came to live here after the war. They brought belongings from different regions. Not everyone could choose to move: Lemkos were forcibly resettled during Operation Vistula. Family photographs show life before and after changing homes.
The temporary exhibition “Life on Coal”, running from 26 September to 29 November 2026, concerns people living near the Turów mine and power station. Their memories reveal how industry changed towns, villages and daily life.
