À propos de l’objet

The white, medium-length coat of the Carpathian goat parts along the back and falls down both sides of the body. These goats have horns and often a fringe above the eyes. Males have particularly prominent, spreading, twisting horns, together with a thick beard and mane. This native Polish breed is associated with traditional farming in the Carpathian region.

For a time, it was considered extinct. In 2005, two surviving breeding groups were found, and the animals purchased from them were taken to Odrzechowa, where work to restore the breed began. In later years, further animals matching its breed standard were brought into the programme. This is the history of a domestic goat breed, not a separate species of wild goat.

Conservation aims to preserve its characteristics and genetic diversity while increasing the population. Carpathian goats cope well with difficult conditions and are undemanding about feed. They matter to small farms and the region's agricultural traditions. Their presence in a zoo shows that conserving diversity also includes farm animals whose traditional breeds can disappear from husbandry.

Pour les enfants

This white goat has a coat that parts along its back and falls to either side. It may have a fringe above its eyes and horns on its head. Males have especially wide-spreading horns, thick beards and manes. The Carpathian goat is an old Polish breed of domestic goat.

For a while, people thought it no longer existed. But surviving animals were found in 2005. They were taken to a breeding centre in Odrzechowa, where the breed's recovery began. It is a little like finding a missing piece of family history, except that these are real animals.

Carpathian goats cope well with difficult conditions and are not fussy eaters. Breeders work to preserve their traits and diversity. A zoo can therefore also introduce farm animals that needed help for their breed to survive.
