À propos de l’objet

The feather tufts on an Eurasian eagle-owl's head resemble ears, but they are not hearing organs. The owl's ear openings are hidden beneath its plumage. Its large eyes have yellow-orange irises, while broad, rounded wings form part of the silhouette of Poland's largest owl. Females are generally heavier than males, although individual birds naturally vary in size.

The eagle-owl lives across large parts of Europe and Asia. Its habitats include mountains, rocky ground, ravines and old woodland adjoining open areas. It may nest on a sheltered rock ledge, in a crevice or in the abandoned nest of another large bird. It often rests during the day, becoming active at dusk and continuing into the night.

It hunts mammals and birds, catching prey both on the ground and in flight. Its prey includes rodents and larger animals, so its diet is not confined to a single species. Eagle-owls form pairs and defend their territory. While the female incubates the eggs, the male brings her food; after the chicks hatch, he continues helping to supply the family.

Pour les enfants

Two tufts of feathers stick up from this owl's head. They look like ears, but its actual ear openings are hidden under the plumage. The Eurasian eagle-owl also has large orange eyes. It is the largest owl found in Poland.

In the wild, it chooses habitats such as forests, mountains and rocky places. It can nest on a sheltered rock ledge or use an old nest built by another large bird. It often rests during the day. At dusk and at night, it hunts rodents, birds and other animals.

The parents share tasks when raising young. The female sits on the eggs, while the male brings her food. Later, he also helps feed the family. If an eagle-owl sits quietly during your visit, it may simply be resting before its night-time activity.
