Artillery readiness shelter
A concrete artillery shelter on the fortress approaches, preserved despite the demolitions of 1915.
Langue du contenu
The artillery readiness shelter is a concrete structure dating from 1912. Built before the First World War, it formed part of the Góra Skobielewa strongpoint, supplementing Osowiec's main forts. Its purpose was to protect soldiers and equipment from heavy artillery fire. Sheltering gun crews was a different task from firing a weapon: the name refers to the support artillerymen needed during battle.
The structure survived the demolition of fortifications in 1915. These demolitions accompanied the Russian retreat, when troops destroyed infrastructure before abandoning the fortress.
Today the shelter is one of the objects encountered on the Góra Skobla path. A battery shelter also stands along the same trail. They are two separate parts of the former defences, not alternative names for a single building.
