2S7 Pion self-propelled gun
Heavy artillery on its own chassis represents a different role from the museum’s tanks.
A tartalom nyelve
The 2S7 Pion is among the heaviest designs in Drzonów’s artillery collection. It is a self-propelled gun: artillery carried on its own chassis rather than towed by another vehicle. The museum example dates from 1985. Its chassis was made at the Kirov Works in Leningrad and its gun at the Barrikady plant in Volgograd.
The gun’s calibre is approximately 203 mm. In the museum collection, the Pion stands at the opposite end of the scale from small 45 mm anti-tank guns. Its long barrel and large chassis reflect the demands of heavy artillery. Although it runs on tracks, it is not a tank; the purpose for which a vehicle was designed is also part of its identity.
The Polish Army’s Pions served in artillery brigades in Głogów and Bolesławiec. The Drzonów vehicle is among the equipment preserved after that service ended. It adds the history of artillery units to the tank collection, through a design centred on a large gun mounted on a self-propelled carrier.
Gyerekeknek
The Pion runs on tracks, but it is not a tank. It is a self-propelled gun: a large artillery piece carried on its own vehicle. It did not need to be towed behind a truck. The Drzonów example was built in 1985. The chassis and gun were made in two different cities, Leningrad and Volgograd.
Its gun has a calibre of about 203 millimetres. Calibre describes the diameter inside the barrel. The same museum collection includes much smaller 45 mm guns. Polish Pions served with artillery units in Głogów and Bolesławiec. Comparing them with tanks helps show that moving in the same way does not mean performing the same military task.
