In the mid-19th century, developments in artificial dye production were connected with the beginnings of drug synthesis. The Synthetic Medicines exhibition takes up this theme in the history of chemistry and pharmacy. It covers synthetic and semi-synthetic medicines and their methods of production. Its subject is the manufacture of medicinal products and the laboratory work involved in preparing them.
The collection includes analytical and measuring apparatus. Different dosage forms are displayed alongside it: tablets, sugar-coated tablets, capsules and suppositories. These are forms of preparations, not the names of individual substances. Laboratory tools are thus placed beside forms in which a medicine can be used.
This arrangement connects two subjects: the chemical preparation of a medicinal product and its final form. The apparatus provides physical evidence of laboratory work, while the tablets, capsules and other dosage forms concern the preparation itself.
