Bird collection
Ostriches, hummingbirds and preserved specimens of extinct species.
A tartalom nyelve
The bird section of “The World of Animals” presents 448 species from 137 families. These figures refer to the display, which shows the variety of bird sizes and outlines. Representatives of many distant parts of the world are brought together in one collection. Large ostriches and tiny hummingbirds demonstrate the range of sizes. Both body types belong to birds, yet their proportions differ greatly. The systematic arrangement organises this diversity by animal groups.
Historical specimens include the great auk, passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet, all three now extinct. Preserved mounts retain the appearance of animals that can no longer be seen in the wild. In their case, the collection also records losses in bird diversity. Kiwi, penguins and birds of paradise are represented too, each adding a different outline to the display. Preparing the specimens has preserved their external features. The collection forms part of a larger zoological exhibition with more than 1,500 exhibits. Ornithology, the study of birds, occupies a substantial section within it.

Not all the birds shown still live on Earth. The great auk, passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet are extinct. Museum specimens preserve their appearance. Kiwi, penguins and birds of paradise are also represented. The study of birds is called ornithology. This large collection belongs to “The World of Animals”, an exhibition with more than 1,500 exhibits representing different animal groups.
