Mrągowo preserves a Star 266 with a cargo body, built in 1978. Series production of this type ran in Starachowice from 1973 to 2000. It succeeded the Star 66 and 660 family as a medium-capacity off-road truck used by the Polish Army. Its 6×6 layout sends power to all three axles.
The truck used a Polish S359 six-cylinder diesel engine of about 6.84 litres, developing 150 metric horsepower. Payload depended on driving conditions: five tonnes on roads and three and a half tonnes off-road. Besides the cargo version, the design carried radio stations, mobile workshops, command bodies, tankers, cranes and excavators. A shared chassis therefore did not mean that all Star 266s had the same job. The Mrągowo vehicle’s cargo body represents the transport version of this wide-ranging family, while enclosed bodies could accommodate communications or workshop equipment. When comparing military trucks, the body tells as much about their work as the model name on the vehicle.

The Star 266 was a Polish truck made in Starachowice. The Mrągowo example dates from 1978 and has a cargo body. The model was produced from 1973 to 2000. Its 6×6 drive means that the engine powers all three axles. This layout was used in a vehicle designed for off-road travel.
The six-cylinder engine ran on diesel and developed 150 metric horsepower. On a road, the truck could carry five tonnes. Off-road, its permitted load was smaller: three and a half tonnes. The same chassis was used to build other vehicles, including mobile workshops, radio stations and tankers. Two Star 266s could therefore look different and perform different jobs. The version with a cargo body was mainly used for transport.
