Lingua dei contenuti
The 85 mm Model 1939 anti-aircraft gun was a heavy weapon transported on four wheels. The number 85 mm gives its calibre, while Model 1939 identifies the design. It was towed by a vehicle and had no engine for driving itself. At a firing position, its cross-shaped base was unfolded and the wheels raised. Supports took the weight and stabilised the structure. The carriage used for transport then became the gun’s base. The difference between travelling and deployed configurations reflected the need for stability.
A team of seven people operated it. Handwheel mechanisms adjusted the barrel, and the gun could turn through a full circle. Recoil equipment absorbed the movement after a shot and returned the barrel to its original position. Operating the system required shared duties. A metal shield with folding upper sections protected the crew. The gun could reach targets high above the ground: its vertical range was around 10,500 metres. The shield, folding base and wide barrel movement were features of equipment designed to engage aircraft.

This gun was intended to defend against aircraft. 85 millimetres is its calibre. During a journey, another vehicle pulled it along on four wheels. At its working position it looked different: supports were unfolded into a cross and the wheels were raised.
The supports kept the heavy machine steady. Seven people were needed to operate it. Handwheels adjusted the barrel, while special mechanisms controlled its movement after a shot. A metal shield protected the soldiers and its upper parts could fold down. The gun turned through a full circle and could fire very high. Its vertical range was about ten and a half kilometres. The wheels, supports and shield each had a different purpose.
