L’oggetto

Heavy forequarters, high shoulders, short head and beard give the European bison its distinctive shape. Males are bulkier than females, with powerful shoulders contrasting sharply with the narrower hindquarters. This is Europe’s largest land mammal. Despite its massive build, it can run fast and turn quickly, so a leisurely walk should not be mistaken for a lack of agility.

Bison eat plants. They graze on grasses and herbs and also browse shoots and tree bark. They favour forests with vegetation available near the ground. Females and calves form groups of changing membership, led by an experienced cow. Adult males often travel alone, joining females during the breeding season.

European bison disappeared from the wild in the 1920s. Animals survived in human care, and their descendants made the restoration of wild populations possible. The species therefore offers a concrete example of wildlife recovery as well as an encounter with a large herbivore. In small, isolated populations, the effects of close relatedness remain a concern. Conservation continues after release: suitable habitats and genetic diversity are still essential.

A bison has strong shoulders, a big head and a beard. Its front looks much heavier than its back. It is Europe’s largest land mammal. Although it often walks slowly, it can run fast and turn quickly.

This giant eats plants: grasses, herbs, shoots and tree bark. Females and youngsters live in groups led by an experienced female. Adult males often live separately and join the group during the breeding season.

About a hundred years ago, no European bison remained in the wild. Some survived in human care. Their descendants helped return the species to nature. That makes the bison important in the history of wildlife conservation. Today it still needs forests with food and care for wild populations, so that they do not become too small and closely related.
