L’oggetto

The Church of Peace in Jawor, represented here in miniature, was built in 1654-1655. The Peace of Westphalia, which ended the Thirty Years’ War, made its construction possible. For Silesian Lutherans, permission to build a church nevertheless came with strict conditions. It had to stand outside the town, use wood and clay, and have no tower. Construction was to take no more than a year. A timber frame supported a large church intended for a substantial congregation.

Albrecht von Säbisch designed the building, while Andreas Gamper supervised the carpentry. It has a central nave and two aisles, with a gabled roof over the higher central section. A tower was added only in 1708, after the legal conditions changed. It therefore belongs to a later phase in the church’s history. The miniature represents a monument shaped by both its carpenters’ skill and historic religious restrictions.

The Church of Peace in Jawor was built for Lutherans after the Thirty Years’ War. Its name refers to the peace that made the church possible. The builders faced difficult rules: they had to use wood and clay, work outside the town and initially could not erect a tower.

Albrecht von Säbisch prepared the design. Carpenters, craftspeople who build with wood, made the frame of the large church. Inside, they planned a central space called the nave and an aisle on either side. The original church was finished in 1655. Its tower appeared only in 1708, when the rules allowed one. The model in Kowary presents a building whose shape was also determined by restrictions imposed on its makers.
