Ford T (1926)
A car of mass motoring, with a planetary transmission and a chassis suited to rough roads.

The Gdynia Ford Model T dates from 1926, near the end of a production run lasting from 1908 to 1927. Its designers had to allow for very rough American roads. A flexible frame and suspension coped with bumps better than a rigid chassis. Light, strong vanadium-alloy steel was used in its construction.
The engine’s four cylinders were cast in a single block. At the start of Model T production this was an advanced solution, lighter and cheaper to assemble than many contemporary designs. A removable cylinder head made it easier for mechanics to reach and service the valves.
The distinctive planetary transmission provided two forward speeds, with its gears constantly in mesh. Planet gears revolved around a central gear. Changing ratio did not require sliding one set of gear teeth into another, as with the unsynchronised transmissions common at the time. Easier operation, durability and large-scale production together defined the Model T.
Pre deti
This Ford Model T was built in 1926, when many roads were full of holes and ruts. Its frame and suspension could flex over uneven ground. Steel containing a metal called vanadium helped make strong parts without too much weight.
The engine had four cylinders, the spaces in which pistons move, all formed in one block. Its top section, called the cylinder head, could be removed to make repairs easier. Inside the gearbox, smaller gears travelled around a central gear, rather like planets around the Sun. That is why it is called a planetary transmission. It provided two forward speeds. The Model T was produced from 1908 to 1927.
