O exponáte

Leon Necel, Franciszek’s son, represented the eighth generation of potters. He grew up around his father’s workshop and began systematic training at seventeen. In 1926 he passed his journeyman examination in Kościerzyna, making a bowl and two jugs. Following his father’s death in 1935, he took over the workshop and gained his master’s qualification that same year. For the practical examination at Meissner’s workshop in Kartuzy, he threw, decorated and fired two vases. The theoretical examination took place in Grudziądz.

He retained the seven family patterns in his decoration but experimented with vessel shapes and accepted special commissions. These included vases over a metre tall and urns resembling ancient finds from Pomerania. The war interrupted the workshop’s activity. Leon restarted production in 1946 after securing funds to equip the damaged premises. In 1950 he contributed the workshop to a cooperative and worked there as a master potter. His ceramics remain part of the family display alongside work by Franciszek and Ryszard.

Pre deti

Leon Necel learned pottery from his father Franciszek. For his journeyman examination in 1926, he made a bowl and two jugs. A journeyman is a craftsman who has already learned the basics of a trade. Leon later became a master and took over the family workshop.

He painted the same seven patterns as his father but tried different vessel shapes. Some of his vases were over a metre tall. He also made forms resembling ancient urns. After the war he had to equip the damaged workshop again. Production restarted in 1946. His work is displayed alongside pottery made by two other generations of the family.
