O exponáte

The alpine garden combines mountain plants with a display of rocks. Heinrich Robert Göppert established its older part in the mid-19th century. The plants were arranged by geographical origin, so neighbouring mounds represent the flora of different mountain ranges. The collection includes plants from the mountains of Europe, Asia, the Americas and New Zealand. A newer section was laid out in 1989-1992 using limestone, granite and serpentinite from Lower Silesian quarries. It contains garden varieties of rock plants and wild, sun-loving species from Asia and North America.

Low growth, compact clumps, waxy coatings and dense leaf hairs are among the adaptations that help plants cope with mountain climates. These features remain even when the plants are moved to lowland gardens. The Wrocław collection contains around 2,000 species and varieties of mountain plants. Among the rocks is an 1856 geological section of the Wałbrzych Coal Basin. It shows the arrangement of coal, sandstone and shale layers. Impressions and casts of Carboniferous plants, including calamites, lepidodendrons and sigillarias, accompany the section. Beside the living collection is a record of vegetation from millions of years ago.

Pre deti

An alpine garden is a rock garden with plants from the mountains. Its oldest part was created in the 19th century. Different mounds display plants from places such as Europe, Asia and New Zealand.

Mountain plants have to cope with wind, cold and strong sunlight. Many grow close to the ground or form compact clumps. They still look like this here, even though Wrocław is in the lowlands. The newer part of the rock garden was built using limestone, granite and serpentinite.

A separate structure made of rocks shows how layers of coal and other rocks lie around Wałbrzych. It was built in 1856. Impressions and casts of ancient plants are displayed beside it.
