Church of Saint Joseph
Michael Willmann’s paintings depict the Holy Family’s ancestors and Saint Joseph’s joys and sorrows.
Jazyk obsahu
The walls and vault of Saint Joseph’s Church carry a cycle of more than 50 paintings by Michael Willmann. Its subjects are arranged across the interior: the Holy Family’s ancestors appear on the vault, Joseph’s seven joys in the western chapels and his seven sorrows in the eastern ones. Abbot Bernard Rosa selected the themes, emphasising Joseph’s role as Jesus’ protector.
The church was built in 1690-1696, commissioned by the same abbot. Martin Urban directed construction with the assistance of Joseph Lepschy. It replaced the Gothic church of Saint Andrew, which had become too small for the growing community. The new church served local parishioners and the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph, founded in 1669.
The architecture leaves broad surfaces for painting. Galleries open to the interior are suspended between piers attached to the walls. Two tiers of windows illuminate the scenes. The planned towers were never completed, leaving only their lower sections within the building’s outline.
The frescoes conveyed religious stories to people who could not read as well as those who could. The contrasting joyful and sorrowful events form a structured account of the Holy Family’s life rather than a random selection of biblical pictures.

Pictures cover the walls and ceiling of this church. Michael Willmann painted more than 50 scenes here. Each part of the interior tells a different story. Above are the Holy Family’s ancestors. The western side shows seven joyful events in Joseph’s life, while the eastern side shows seven sorrowful ones.
The church was built in 1690-1696 on the orders of Abbot Bernard Rosa. Local people and members of the Brotherhood of Saint Joseph came here. Their earlier Gothic church had become too small.
Galleries stand between the piers, and light enters through two tiers of windows. The large paintings helped people learn biblical stories even if they could not read. Joseph appears as Jesus’ protector, accompanying his family through both happy and difficult times.
