ZiS-3 divisional gun
A 76.2 mm Model 1942 gun designed for a range of artillery duties.

Unlike a specialised anti-tank gun, the ZiS-3 was a divisional gun with a broader role. It could engage armoured vehicles, field fortifications and firing positions. An example of this type forms part of Fort No. 9’s artillery collection. Its calibre is 76.2 mm.
Design work began in May 1941 at Artillery Factory No. 92 in Gorky, under Vasily Grabin. The designers used the carriage of the earlier ZiS-2. A carriage supports the barrel and the gun’s mechanisms. They aimed to reduce manufacturing costs and the time required for production. The Red Army formally adopted the ZiS-3 in February 1942.
The gun has a split-trail carriage and a steel protective shield. Its sights allowed both direct and indirect fire. From the summer of 1943, guns of this type also served with Polish units fighting on the Eastern Front.

The ZiS-3 was designed for several different artillery tasks. It could be used against armoured vehicles, fortifications and military positions. Its calibre of 76.2 mm is larger than that of the ZiS-2.
Vasily Grabin’s team began working on the design in 1941. The engineers used the ZiS-2’s carriage: the structure supporting the barrel and the gun’s mechanisms. They wanted to make production easier and reduce its cost. The completed type was adopted for service in February 1942.
The gun has a steel shield and two spreading arms known as the trails of the carriage. Its sights allowed it to aim directly at a visible target or use indirect fire. From the summer of 1943, this equipment also served with Polish units on the Eastern Front. In the museum, it is an example of artillery technology from the Second World War.
