Four confessionals
Evidence of the former practice of individual confession among Silesian Lutherans.
Jazyk obsahu
The church preserves four confessionals. Their presence reflects a former religious practice: Silesian Lutherans made individual oral confessions of their sins to a minister. These furnishings belong to the Lutheran church’s own history, rather than indicating a change of denomination. Three were donated by residents of Kamienna Góra and made in 1683, during the gradual furnishing of the interior. This donation shows that worshippers from outside Jawor also helped equip the church.
The fourth confessional dates from 1708 and was a gift from the residents of Jawor. The ensemble was therefore not produced as a single commission: it comprises two civic donations separated by a quarter of a century. Individual oral confession continued among Silesian Lutherans until the early nineteenth century. The confessionals record a practice that lasted long after they were made. Their history is explained by their liturgical purpose and by the communities that paid for them.
