About

The monument to Daniel von Osterberg commemorates the man who directed the development of Wambierzyce towards pilgrimage. It was erected in 1867, long after its founder's death. Osterberg owned estates in Ratno Dolne and Wambierzyce, and his work encompassed both the church and the surrounding Calvary complex.

The first Calvary chapels were built on his initiative in 1683. Made of wood, they have not survived. Development continued beyond a single undertaking: later generations rebuilt chapels, paths and the church itself.

The church funded by Osterberg was consecrated in 1710, but serious structural problems soon threatened it. The basilica's present form is the result of later work, not solely the achievement of the man commemorated here. The monument therefore honours the initiator of the village's transformation. Almost two hundred years separate it from the first wooden chapels, during which Wambierzyce gradually acquired its extensive collection of religious buildings.
