About the route

The route begins with giant otters and red pandas in the outdoor garden. The first encounter introduces a family in which older siblings help raise younger ones. The second leads to mountain forests and shelters chosen by a mother panda. The walk starts outside before continuing into the Orientarium.

At the elephants, the subject turns to finding food and moving around: the trunk performs several tasks, and this large plant-eater is also a capable swimmer. Lion-tailed macaques shift the focus to treetops and group life. Next, the blacktip reef shark and ocellated eagle ray compare two ways of hunting underwater: catching small animals and crushing hard shells and armour.

The false gharial takes the story from ocean tanks to wetlands. Its narrow snout is a fish hunter’s tool. The next encounter, with the orangutan, returns to families and sleeping nests. A binturong shows how a grasping tail helps with climbing, and the sun bear closes the route with claws and a long tongue for gathering honey.

Follow the zoo’s paths and signs between stops. Two aquarium stops concern residents of the same zone; their sequence orders the story rather than the position of each fish.

For children

First you will visit giant otters, whose older offspring help their parents, then red pandas from mountain forests. These two encounters take place in the outdoor garden. The walk then continues into the Orientarium.

The elephant shows how many tasks a trunk can perform. The lion-tailed macaque reveals family life high in the trees. Next come a shark that catches small animals and an eagle ray that can crush shells. Both fish live in the ocean zone.

After the fish, it is time for a long-snouted false gharial and an orangutan that builds a sleeping nest. At the end wait a binturong with a grasping tail and a sun bear with a long tongue. Walk with an adult and follow the zoo’s signs. At each stop, look for a feature that helps the animal find food, move or care for its young.
