About

The Glass Laboratory has a glass furnace, tools and equipment for exploring the stages of making glass objects. This small glassworks adds a working workshop to the museum's collections. During organised demonstrations, visitors can watch a glassmaker handle heated material rather than only view finished vessels.

The laboratory was built in 2018-2019 and opened in September 2019. It formed part of the “Glass Route on the Polish-Czech Border” project, carried out with the town of Nový Bor under Interreg V-A CZ-PL. The partnership brought together regions with their own glassmaking traditions on both sides of the border.

The workshop programme includes grinding, engraving, coloured enamel decoration, glass painting and stained-glass making. These techniques treat the same material differently, from shaping its surface to adding colour and composing pieces of glass. The laboratory combines knowledge of historic craft with practical work. Techniques represented in museum objects become separate stages of a glassmaker's or decorator's work.
