About

The sword blade bears the signature “ALLIVS PA”, the mark of a Roman swordsmith. It distinguishes this weapon among the arms found at the cemetery in Wesółki/Janków II. The sword was part of the grave goods in a burial associated with the Przeworsk culture.

The weapon dates from around 60 BC to the first century AD. Made in a Roman workshop, it reached the lands of present-day Poland. Its place of manufacture and its findspot connect two different settings: Roman arms production and a community that used imported weapons and placed them in graves.

The signature is on the blade, the main striking part of the sword. The surviving inscription records the maker's work, while the burial context documents a later stage in the object's history.
