Engine collection

Engine cutaways and a generator set explore propulsion and electrical power.

About

The engine collection brings together power units and training cutaways for comparison. The W-54-T engine comes from a PTS-M amphibious tracked carrier: it has a V12 layout, a displacement of 38,880 cm³ and an output of 350 metric horsepower. This diesel belongs to a family of engines used in numerous tanks and tracked vehicles.

A Fiat OHV petrol-engine cutaway shows four cylinders in line; the 1,481 cm³ unit produced 75 metric horsepower and powered vehicles including the Polski Fiat 125p. The collection also contains a cutaway of the Polish S-359 diesel with an S-29 gearbox. The six-cylinder S-359 displaced 6,842 cm³, produced 150 metric horsepower and was used in trucks including the Star 200, 244 and 266.

The EPZ-20-3/400/7 generator set combines an S 322 engine from WSW Andrychów with a Celma GCe 74 generator. It was manufactured in Piechowice in 1962. Comparing vehicle engines with a generator set broadens the subject: an engine’s work can move a machine or supply an electrical installation.

For children

An engine is usually hidden beneath a vehicle’s cover. In the engine collection, you can examine power units themselves and their training cutaways. A cutaway exposes parts hidden inside. This makes it easier to compare different machines and see that not every engine looks the same.

The W-54-T comes from a PTS-M amphibious carrier. It has twelve cylinders arranged in a V shape. The collection also shows a Fiat OHV engine cutaway with four cylinders in a single row. This engine powered vehicles including the Polski Fiat 125p. The Polish S-359 engine had six cylinders and was used in Star trucks.

There is also a generator set, a machine that produces electricity. It was made in Piechowice in 1962. Its engine works with an electrical generator. An engine can therefore help a vehicle travel, but it can also drive a device that supplies electricity. These are two different jobs using a similar engineering idea.
