Múzeum v Kežmarku - Kežmarský hrad
Kežmarok Castle combines the history of an aristocratic residence with collections devoted to the town’s inhabitants. It grew alongside the municipal fortifications, and successive owners changed its appearance. The Thököly family transformed it into a prestigious residence; surviving features from their time include fragments of wall paintings and the chapel furnishings.
Displays explore local government, guilds, the shooting society and historic healthcare. The sword used in the mayor’s oath shares this story with apothecary tools and Vojtech Alexander’s X-ray machine. Seventeenth-century Polish hussar armour is a highlight of the arms collection, while the lapidarium preserves original stonework replaced outside by copies.
The early Baroque chapel retains stucco, biblical scenes and a limewood altarpiece. Another part of the museum explores the town’s links with the Tatras, while the viewing tower overlooks the town and mountains. The castle grounds also contain a display of historic vehicles and firefighting equipment.
The museum officially opened on 31 May 1931. Its founder was physician Oskar Szelényi, commemorated by a plaque at the entrance beneath the main gate.
