About

The natural history exhibition opened on 26 March 2010 and presents the past and present nature of the eastern Lublin region, from geology and palaeontology to botany and zoology. It is divided into four parts. The "Treasury of Nature" brings together plants and animals of xerothermic grasslands, including the carline thistle Carlina onopordifolia. The specimens include the great bustard, which has died out as a breeding bird in Poland, and the endangered speckled ground squirrel.

The part "On the lake, among the peat bogs, in the forest…" presents the marshes and calcareous fens of Polesie and the Chełm area. It features the European pond turtle, which occurs in the Żółwie Błota reserve in Sobibór Landscape Park. The waterbirds on display include the common crane, Eurasian bittern, little bittern, purple heron, black stork and northern shoveler. The "Cabinet of Curiosities" recreates the workplace of a naturalist, collector and gatherer of oddities.

The geological "Petrified World" begins with Precambrian granitoids that lie here at a depth of 5,000 metres. The Mesozoic sea is evoked by Cretaceous ammonites, belemnites, sea urchins and nautiloids, and the Pleistocene by the skulls of a woolly rhinoceros, cave bear and musk ox, as well as mammoth bones and teeth.
