About

Plants from warm climates are brought together in the greenhouse collections. These include bromeliads, tropical forest-floor plants and a collection grown hydroponically. They are separate from the palm house under reconstruction. Greenhouse access follows the garden’s seasonal arrangements, and individual sections may close temporarily. Tillandsia, or air plants, are particularly well represented among the bromeliads. Many grow on other plants or on rocks. Their reduced roots mainly anchor them, while water and nutrients are absorbed through their leaves. Other bromeliads form water-holding tanks at the bases of their leaves.

The greenhouse associated with Panorama Natury demonstrates hydroponic cultivation. Concrete basins contain nutrient solution and air, with a mesh carrying a layer of humus-rich growing medium above them. Zofia Gumińska began work on the Wrocław method in the 1950s. Plants displayed in the greenhouses include philodendrons, anthuriums, monsteras, ferns and cycads. Some collections come from subtropical regions and need less warmth. Many such specimens are placed outdoors in containers from spring to autumn. Their summer display outside therefore does not mean they can be seen in the same location throughout the year.

For children

The greenhouses shelter plants that would find Wrocław’s winter too cold. They contain bromeliads, plants from the tropical forest floor and plants grown using a special method with nutrient solution. These collections are separate from the palm house under reconstruction.

Tillandsia, or air plants, often attach themselves to other plants or rocks. Their small roots hold them in place, while their leaves take up water. Other bromeliads form little tanks at the bases of their leaves.

In hydroponic cultivation, roots have access to water containing nutrients. Zofia Gumińska worked on the Wrocław method. Some greenhouse plants spend the warmer months outside in containers. They do not remain in those outdoor locations during winter.
