About

Ogród Zoologiczny w Bydgoszczy

Bydgoszcz Zoological Garden covers around 14 hectares in the southern part of Myślęcinek, the extensive Forest Park of Culture and Recreation. It has operated since 1978. Native wildlife is an important feature: alongside European bison and elk, visitors can discover wolves, brown bears, otters and eagle-owls. Meeting these species offers a different perspective on Poland’s forests, rivers and wetlands, whose wild inhabitants usually avoid encounters with people.

The collection also includes animals from other parts of the world. The Amur tiger shows that large cats can live in a cold climate, while the snow leopard reveals adaptations to mountain life. The capybara turns attention towards South American waters. Comparing them with native mammals highlights differences in body shape, movement and the importance of water and vegetation in everyday animal life.

The grounds include large mammal enclosures, bird aviaries and a pond with an island. The Aquarium and Terrarium houses fish, amphibians and reptiles, including the African dwarf crocodile. A walk therefore combines open spaces with encounters with small, often secretive inhabitants of tanks and terrariums. Quiet observation reveals details: limb proportions, head shapes, feather positions and ways of resting can be as interesting as movement.

For children

At Bydgoszcz Zoo you can meet animals from Polish forests and waters, as well as species from faraway places. The zoo has been open since 1978 and stands in Myślęcinek. It covers around fourteen hectares, with room for many different animal worlds.

Bison have powerful shoulders, elk have long legs, and otters have bodies suited to swimming. Wolves live in family groups, while adult tigers usually prefer being alone. You can compare these differences as you visit. Not every large animal eats meat, and not every big cat comes from a hot forest.

There are mammal enclosures, bird aviaries and a pond with an island. Fish, amphibians and reptiles live in the Aquarium and Terrarium, including the small African dwarf crocodile. Watch resting animals quietly, too. It can be easier to examine their ears, tails and paws that way. Do not feed the animals or tap on glass: quiet lets you see their behaviour without disturbing them.
