About

Podpolianske múzeum

Fujaras, wooden crosses and a sea captain's mementos meet in this museum of the Podpoľanie region. They tell of a place that produced craftspeople, shepherds and people who sought work far from their native mountains. Alongside folk instruments, the displays introduce the Vagač family's cheese manufactory and the travels of Július Juraj Thurzo.

The town of Detva established the museum in 1994. Since 2014 it has occupied the former municipal office, with a carved pillar made by the local Fekiač brothers. Ethnographic objects form the largest part of the collection. A model of a shepherd's camp depicts pastoral farming, while the historical exhibition places a market charter alongside regional glassware.

Crosses from Detva's cemetery show different forms of local woodcarving, from plain, undecorated examples to painted ornament. Instruments from the Instrumentum Excellens competition add a craft assessed for both its appearance and its sound.
