About

A porcelain wash set and a jewellery box shift attention from the town's public life to objects used at home. Glass, metalwork, paintings and ornamental furniture accompany them. The furnishings date from the eighteenth to the twentieth century. They therefore present a selection of historic household objects, rather than a single home furnished at one particular moment.

Many belonged to the antiques collection of Anton Solčiansky, the museum's founder. A private interest in old objects became part of a public collection. The variety of materials matters: porcelain, glass and metal appear in objects serving different purposes, from personal care and the storage of small possessions to room decoration.

The display also includes a clock with a porcelain dial and a jardinière with a central vase. Both combine a useful form with decorative treatment. When comparing the objects, it helps to distinguish function from material: porcelain does not mean tableware alone. It also appears in a wash set and a clock dial, objects belonging to very different areas of everyday life.
