About

Wieża Książęca w Siedlęcinie

The Ducal Tower in Siedlęcin preserves timber ceilings from the early 14th century and a painted story of Lancelot. Founded by Henry I of Jawor, the stone residence was built beside the River Bóbr in 1313-1315. It combined living quarters with the protection of crenellations, an enclosing wall and a moat.

Its most remarkable interior is the great hall with wall paintings of Lancelot of the Lake. The adventures of the knight of the Round Table, the release of captives and his romance with Guinevere unfold in successive scenes. The decoration remains in the building for which it was made, beneath a timber ceiling rather than a vault.

The tower survived a fire, alterations and a period of use as a granary. Blocked crenellations record structural changes, while the uncovered paintings restore part of the interior's former courtly character. Visitors encounter the medieval residence itself, not a reconstruction transferred to a modern museum.
