About

Zamek Grodno

Grodno Castle stands above the Bystrzyca valley on the rocky hill of Choina. Its medieval walls, Renaissance portals and tower with a changing cross-section belong to different building phases. The view takes in Bystrzyckie Lake and the Wałbrzyskie and Owl Mountains.

The stronghold's history reaches back at least to 1315. The robber knight Jerzy Mühlheim held it in the 15th century; in the following century, the von Logau family expanded it into a residence with decorated interiors and a service courtyard. After destruction and neglect, the castle faced demolition. In 1823, Wrocław professor Johann Gustav Büsching saved it, and the ruins were gradually adapted for visitors.

A visit today leads through courtyards, stone passages and castle rooms. Małgorzata's Dungeon presents a legend that should not be confused with the history of its displayed skeleton. At the Multimedia Bio-education Centre, the focus shifts from the building to nature: a film about bats and a presentation of the four seasons explore the Owl Mountains and the reserve surrounding the castle.
