Foregate with Heraldic Portal
Coats of arms and carved figures at the entrance to the former von Logau residence.
Content language
Eight coats of arms above the entrance arch represent families associated with Georg von Logau. The foregate portal was created during the Renaissance rebuilding of the residence around 1570. A double-headed eagle with two griffins crowns the design; figures at the sides personify virtues, including Faith and Hope.
The carved surround belongs to a building shaped as a squat quadrangular tower, later transformed into a pavilion. Its later appearance included large round-arched windows and a pyramidal roof. After 1823, Johann Gustav Büsching restored the building and added a third window on its southern side.
The portal itself also changed during successive repairs: its inner arch disappeared, and the missing figure on the right was reconstructed. The present design therefore contains both Renaissance stones and later additions. Compare the folds of the figures' clothing: the reconstructed figure is not an exact mirror image of the surviving one. Stone analysis identified both sandstone from around Lwówek Śląski and red material matching a deposit near Nowa Ruda.
