About

Daisy von Pless furnished her apartment between 1908 and 1913. She chose a former guest apartment next to her husband's rooms. It did not connect directly with the grand drawing room and library, giving her greater privacy. The apartment comprised a drawing room, bedroom, boudoir and bathroom; most of its furnishings have survived.

The drawing room was decorated in the Adam style, an English form of Neoclassicism popular in the second half of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Light colours accompany delicate stucco decoration, with griffins among the motifs on the ceiling. Chippendale-style chairs have pierced backs and ball-and-claw feet. Their design draws on Gothic and Chinese influences.

Daisy also commissioned changes to other rooms in the castle. In 1908, her predecessors' red drawing room became a green guest drawing room: the wall fabric was removed, the colour changed and the furniture replaced. The ceiling painting, cove decoration and marble fireplace with its mirror remained. The work therefore extended beyond Daisy's own rooms to those used by her guests.
