An adult male mandrill’s face combines vivid red with blue ridges beside the nose. In females and young, the colouring is less intense, and adult females are much smaller than males. Brightly coloured parts of the body also help the animals see one another in dense vegetation. A mandrill has a short tail, and its solid build contrasts with the long, light bodies of many tree-dwelling monkeys.

Mandrills inhabit tropical forests in western equatorial Africa. They spend much of their time on the ground, walking on all fours, but they are also skilful climbers. They sleep in trees. Active during the day, they choose shaded places for resting.

Cheek pouches allow a mandrill to collect food and carry it to a safer place before eating. Food can thus be stored briefly inside its mouth. The diet is not restricted to fruit: it also includes seeds, underground plant parts, insects and small vertebrates. This mixed menu makes it an omnivore. Long forelimbs help the animal travel across the forest floor, where it searches for many of these foods. Climbing complements its ground-based activity and provides opportunities to rest above the ground.

An adult male mandrill has a very colourful face. Alongside red areas there are blue ridges. Females and young are less brightly coloured, and females are much smaller than males. Mandrills also have short tails.

They come from tropical forests in Africa. During the day they often walk on all fours along the ground, looking for food. But they can climb trees very well too. Trees are where they spend the night.

A mandrill has special food pouches inside its cheeks. It can fill them, carry the food away and eat later in a safer place. It eats fruit, seeds, underground plant parts, insects and small vertebrates. An animal with this kind of diet is called an omnivore: it obtains food from both plants and animals.
